ADDICTION by Abdullah Yousuf

What does addiction mean? Well, if you look up on internet you will find many definitions to it as "The condition of being habitually or compulsively occupied with or involved in something" or "A compulsive physiological and psychological need for a habit-forming substance".

Addiction is compulsive need for and use of a habit-forming substance (as heroin, nicotine, or alcohol). Someone who is addicted believes that they cannot do any thing without this substance in their bodies. Drug and alcohol addiction usually tears families apart, they change individuals who once were the best people to be around with.

When you say the word addiction the first thing that come in people's mind is drugs, but you can be addict to many things besides drugs and you don't even know. Many people could be addict to work, video games, excessive use of internet, food or even shopping. People who are truly addicted generally have a compulsion to do something and cannot limit the amount.

I think some activities are more addictive than others, but it depends on people's interests. Some people feel better playing video game than eating or shopping or smoking. Where as some people feel happy spending time on computer than studying or playing.

I am not crazy for computer or video games but I love going to the gym. I go to the gym every day to look better, when I miss a day I feel guilty and bad about myself. Am I addicted to working out? Well I don't think I am addicted to working out because so far it is not interfering with my job, relationship, or other important daily activities. I don't plan my entire day around my visits to the gym. I don't think I could replace my family, friends or work for something that I liked to do.

Alcoholism, also known as alcohol dependence, is also a kind of addiction. Misuse, problem use, abuse, and heavy use refer to improper use of alcohol which may cause physical, social, or moral harm to the drinker. Moderate Use is defined as no more than two alcoholic beverages per day for men and no more than one alcoholic beverage per day for women.

We have never called alcoholism a disease because, technically speaking, it is not a disease entity. For example, there is no such thing as heart disease. Instead there are many separate heart ailments, or combinations of them. It is something like that with alcoholism. Therefore we did not wish to get in wrong with the medical profession by pronouncing alcoholism a disease entity. Therefore we always called it an illness.

Another kind of common addiction is GAMBLING. Gambling affects the person doing it and anyone who is close to them. Through personal experience getting hooked ongambling is mainly from the action and thrill of everything associated with gambling. When gambling they are part of the action and not just watching people play a game for money, but if one is really interested.

Out of all these there is another common addiction in the up coming youth and that is Computer and Internet.Computer and internet have become daily requirments of our lives. Some people have displaced work, school, friends and even family with computer. When too much time is spent on the computer that it reaches a limit where family, social relationship, school and work life is interrupted, that people may be caught in addiction.

Internet addiction is a growing problem with more and more people. The internet is much more accessible to people now than it was just a few years ago. The internet provides people with entertainment, loads of information, and an escape from everyday life, but like anything else, too much a good thing can be addictive. Another problem is associative with the context now a days available on the net that is r rated and is making the teen ages go on the wrong path. This was not available a few years a go but due to the increasing demand, it is now easily available.

The most common of all addictions is smoking and one of the major reason behind it is it’s cheaply availability.Smoking is a practice in which a substance, most commonly tobacco or cannabis, is burned and the smoke tasted or inhaled. Tobacco contains the chemical nicotine. Smoking cigarettes leads to a dependence on nicotine. Other smoking tools include pipes, cigars, hookahs and bongs. Smoking today is the most common form of drug use. Less common drugs for smoking include cannabis or opium.

Some of the substances are classified as hard narcotics, like heroin, but there usage is not very common due to their commercially in availability.
